HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN COMPOST
Composting is certainly catching on these days, and it’s easy to see why. First of all, it reduces the amount of waste produced. A large part of the garbage each person throws away a day is organic material, and easily compostable. Why not try and reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills?
Composting is also beneficial to your garden or yard. You can create your own nutrient-rich soil which will do wonders for your plants and flowers.
Getting started with composting isn’t hard at all. Most people already produce the materials needed just from their regular routines, it’s just about using those things effectively. Really all you need is a space to put the required materials, a pile in your backyard works just fine. Other manufactured composters are on the market, but they are not necessary.
The three things you need for you compost pile:
1. Brown materials — Things like dead leaves and branches, but also cardboard and paper, really any material from trees.
2. Green materials — Grass, plant matter, discarded fruits and vegetables, and coffee grounds.
A good compost pile should contain about half browns and half greens. And have enough water to keep the pile moist, but not too soggy.
All composting really takes is a diligent mindset. Before you throw something away, simply ask yourself, “could this be added to my compost pile?” Then make decisions accordingly. It might be hard at first to change your lifestyle habits, but the benefits of composting are big enough that it’s worth it.
